Summary

Under direct supervision, performs routine engineering research tasks requiring application of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria to perform specific and limited portions of a broader assignment.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Performs activities concerned with design and testing of components and systems for various applications.
  2. Builds and performs tests on electronic, semiconductor, optic, laser, and other systems and components to determine operability.
  3. Interacts with senior research engineers to develop an understanding of experiment needs and requirements.
  4. Reads blueprints, drawings, and schematics; may build prototype equipment or systems.
  5. Maintains currency of knowledge with respect to relevant state-of-the-art technology, equipment, and/or systems.
  6. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a directly related field; at least 6 months of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Knowledge of current technological developments/trends in area of expertise.
  • Ability to interact with students, faculty and/or staff in a team environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
  • Engineering and/or scientific design and testing skills.
  • Knowledge of engineering, science, and mathematics fundamentals.
  • Skill in the use of routine laboratory equipment.
  • Ability to build and test engineering and/or scientific systems and components.
  • Ability to read schematics and blueprints and/or technical manuals.

Distinguishing Characteristics

    Position requires: a) use of standard engineering and mathematical concepts and principles in the design, construction, and testing of components and systems for research and other applications; b) design, organization, and quality control of specific engineering subprojects within a broader project set; c) interaction with more senior research staff as a member of an engineering research/design team; d) working under the guidance and supervision of more senior, experienced engineers.

  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • No or very limited physical effort required.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
  • Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
