Summary

Under limited supervision, provides specialized professional level support in areas of advanced complexity such as systems analysis to implement and support departments and/or the university community with technical solutions as they relate to the academic, research or administrative operations of the department. Resolves problems of advanced complexity, comprehensive nature. Provides technical leadership to users/departments in deriving needs assessments, proposals, implementing requests, and solutions. May supervise or provide functional direction to assigned staff and/or student employees.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Uses independent judgement to install, configure, maintain, and support systems of advanced complexity for end users and/or technology stakeholders.
  2. Analyzes current and proposed departmental/user hardware and software systems.
  3. Develops and provides individual and/or group instruction and/or training to end users on new or updated technologies; may supervise or provide functional direction to assigned staff and/or student employees.
  4. Leads large scale research and development initiatives and/or projects involving the implementation of new technologies.
  5. Oversees and/or leads the review, evaluation and recommendation of solutions relating to hardware and software acquisitions and/or network updates; may maintain, and input applicable records such as, but not limited to, network users, security, and tracking inventory levels of equipment and materials.
  6. Analyzes and/or creates proposals which consist of objectives, scope, and user expectations; gathers facts, analyzes data, and prepares proposal synopses comparing alternatives in terms of cost, time, and availability of resources; recommends courses of action.
  7. Makes final recommendations on bids and proposals for leadership approval.
  8. Analyzes and solves problems of advanced complexity on computer applications and systems for students, faculty, and staff for departments and/or the university community; provides a wide range of in-depth technical assistance to departmental users and/or support staff.
  9. Designs and develops scripts to automate tasks for departments and/or the university community.
  10. Maintains a broad knowledge of state-of-the-art technology, equipment, and/or systems; participates in professional development activities as appropriate.
  11. Evaluates and tests new or modified software programs and software development procedures used to verify that programs function according to user requirements and conform to established guidelines and best practices.
  12. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree; at least 2 years of progressively responsible experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution and/or experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified may be interchangeable on a year-for-year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Advanced knowledge of systems analysis.
  • Knowledge of a broad range of relevant computer systems, applications, and/or related equipment.
  • Knowledge of computer security procedures and protocol.
  • In depth knowledge of advanced operating system, network, or application management tasks.
  • Knowledge of current technological developments/trends in area of expertise.
  • Knowledge of federal copyright laws as they pertain to the use of computer software.
  • Ability to integrate emerging technologies and applications into current environment and to analyze, design, develop, and implement operating systems, network, or application management scripts or processes.

Distinguishing Characteristics

    Position Requires: a) Analyzes and/or creates proposals which consist of objectives, scope, and user expectation; b) Provides advanced professional level support of a comprehensive nature; c) Leads the implementation of new technologies for departments and/or the university community; d) Oversees and/or leads large, medium, and small scope and impact technology projects for departments and/or the university community; e) Leads or providing functional direction to staff and student employees, and f) Designs and develops operating system scripts, network, or application management processes to automate tasks for departments and/or the university community.

Conditions of Employment

  • Specialty licensure/certification may be required, as specified by the department.
  • Successful candidate may be subject to a criminal background check prior to starting work.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Moderate physical effort. May require occasional lifting, handling, pushing, or moving objects up to 50 lbs. Constant standing/walking.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
