The following statements are intended to describe, in broad terms, the general functions and responsibility levels characteristic of positions assigned to this classification. Under indirect supervision, provides pick-up, transport, and delivery of a wide range of items, including sensitive materials, confidential documents, mail, and cash, to and from various departments across campus. Independently maintains and coordinates a time-critical operating schedule and maintains appropriate logs and records. Performs various routine administrative and operational functions as assigned.
Duties and Responsibilities
Picks up, transports, and delivers various items and materials to and from various locations both internal and external to the University.
Coordinates and prioritizes pick up and delivery of items with department representatives as appropriate; organizes delivery schedule to ensure that urgent materials are delivered in a timely manner.
Ensures that sensitive and/or confidential materials and documents are safely and securely transported to their proper destination; practices proper cash handling techniques for the transport of money.
Prepares and maintains accurate transportation logs, vehicle fuel consumption logs, and other data as required.
Schedules, arranges for, and coordinates the maintenance and repair of delivery vehicle as per maintenance guidelines or as otherwise appropriate.
Assists in moving and setting up materials, equipment, and furniture, as appropriate to the requirements of the position.
Follows all appropriate safety, environmental protection, and/or infection control policies and procedures in the transport and delivery of materials.
Attends meetings as required.
May perform clerical duties such as typing, making copies, and distributing mail as required.
Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Job Requirements
High school diploma or GED; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
Ability to record and/or log equipment operational status.
Ability to understand and follow specific instructions and procedures.
Ability to understand and follow safety procedures.
Ability to work independently and reliably, with a demonstrated sense of urgency.
Ability to safely and efficiently operate a motor transport vehicle in the delivery of materials.
Basic organizing and scheduling skills, and the ability to adapt to changing work requirements.
Knowledge of safe handling procedures for the transport and delivery of confidential documents or sensitive materials.
Knowledge of proper cash handling and transport methods and procedures.
Position requires: a) independent day-to-day operation of university motor vehicles to transport materials and equipment; b) transportation and handling of sensitive and/or confidential documents and materials, to include significant amounts of money; c) independently coordinating and maintaining a complex delivery schedule and coordinating urgent deliveries directly with recipient departments; d) maintenance of vehicle usage and maintenance logs and other associated records, and coordination of delivery vehicle maintenance.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects, standing and/or walking for extended periods of times during rush and busy hours of the semester.
Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
Work may involve some exposure to operating circumstances that require following standard or prescribed safety precautions.
