Summary

Undertakes a professional support internship designed to provide on-the-job training and experience to current undergraduate/graduate students or recent college graduates. Engages in various work assignments, projects, and activities, structured to enable the intern to gain the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities needed to perform at a non-professional or paraprofessional level, typically identified with a targeted non-exempt position. Receives training and mentorship in planning and carrying out activities and assignments. This is a fixed-term position, typically up to 24 months.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Provides entry-level services, under supervision of more senior professional staff and/or faculty personnel, as appropriate to the day-to-day operating objectives of the unit.
  2. Undertakes and/or participates in projects and programs designed to develop support skills appropriate to the needs of the organization.
  3. Participates in the planning and implementation of unit projects and initiatives within area of expertise.
  4. Interacts directly with colleagues, clientele, and/or other internal or external constituencies in the planning of assignments and the resolution of day-to-day operational problems.
  5. Receives guidance, training, and mentoring from professional personnel in planning and carrying out activities and assignments.
  6. May provide day-to-day guidance and support to student employees and/or interns within area of specialty.
  7. May undertake related academic studies or enrichment programs as appropriate to the specific objectives of the operating unit.
  8. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Student currently enrolled at an accredited university in a Bachelor's or Master's program, within a year from graduating or a graduate of an accredited university Bachelor's or Master's program who have obtained their degrees no earlier than 24 months prior to the date of hire; no previous experience required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Knowledge of or familiarity with defined area of operational/administrative/technical specialty.
  • Entry-level knowledge and skill at the Bachelors or Masters level within specified area of professional specialty.
  • Ability to understand and follow complex, detailed technical instructions.
  • Project planning skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Distinguishing Characteristics

    Position requires: a defined development plan to enable the intern to gain the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to successfully perform at a non-professional or paraprofessional level (typically identified by a targeted non-exempt classification) upon completion of the internship program.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must present transcripts prior to a formal offer being extended.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.
  • This is a fixed-term position, typically up to 24 months.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
  • No or very limited physical effort required.
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.

The University of New Mexico provides all training required by OSHA to ensure employee safety.
