Summary

Under the close mentorship of professional staff and/or faculty within a specified operating unit of the University, undertakes a range of on-going activities and assigned projects of varying levels of professional complexity requiring knowledge and expertise. Department must target a specific, non-exempt position classification when hiring into the Professional Support Intern classification. This is a fixed-term (typically 1-2 years in duration) career-path position that is restricted to students currently enrolled at an accredited university in a Bachelors or Masters program, within a year from graduating OR graduates of an accredited university Bachelors or Masters program who have obtained their degrees no earlier than 24 months prior to the date of hire.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Provides entry-level professional support services, under supervision of senior professional staff and/or faculty personnel, as appropriate to the day-to-day operating objectives of the unit.
  2. Undertakes and/or participates in projects and programs designed to develop professional support skills appropriate to the needs of the organization.
  3. Participates in the planning and implementation of unit projects and initiatives within area of expertise.
  4. Interacts directly with colleagues, clientele, and/or other internal or external constituencies in the planning of assignments and the resolution of day-to-day operational problems.
  5. Receives guidance, training, and mentoring from professional personnel in planning and carrying out activities and assignments.
  6. May provide day-to-day guidance and support to student employees and/or interns within area of specialty.
  7. May undertake related academic studies or enrichment programs as appropriate to the specific objectives of the operating unit.
  8. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Student currently enrolled at an accredited university in a Bachelor's or Master's program, within a year from graduating; no previous experience required.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Knowledge of or familiarity with defined area of operational/administrative/technical specialty.
  • Entry-level knowledge and skill at the Bachelors or Masters level within specified area of professional specialty.
  • Ability to understand and follow complex, detailed technical instructions.
  • Project planning skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Distinguishing Characteristics

    Position requires: a) interning under the mentorship of professional faculty and/or staff to develop experiential skills in an area of professional specialty; b) working as an active participant in the planning and implementation of unit projects and initiatives.

Conditions of Employment

  • Must present transcripts prior to a formal offer being extended.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
  • No or very limited physical effort required.
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
