Summary

Collects and analyzes information about newsworthy events to write news stories for publication or broadcast. May specialize in one type of reporting, such as sports or political affairs.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Receives assignments or evaluates news leads and news tips to develop story ideas.
  2. Gathers and verifies factual information regarding story through interview, observation, and research.
  3. Organizes material, determines slant or emphasis, and writes story according to prescribed editorial style and format standards.
  4. May monitor police and fire department radio communications to obtain story leads.
  5. May take photographs or shoot video to illustrate stories.
  6. May edit, or assist in editing, videos and/or audios for broadcast.
  7. Delivers live reports from site of event or mobile broadcast unit, as appropriate.
  8. May produce and anchor news and public affairs programs.
  9. Compiles and incorporates supplemental material and background information from a range of sources, such as files, reference libraries, and/or individual knowledgeable sources, as appropriate.
  10. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Ability to develop and deliver presentations.
  • Knowledge of journalism principles and techniques.
  • Skill in the use of journalistic research and methods and techniques.
  • Creative writing skills.
  • Knowledge of editorial and ethical standards for the research and development of journalistic articles and/or presentations.

Conditions of Employment

  • All regular, non-temporary positions assigned to this classification are represented by a labor union and subject to the terms and conditions of the US-UNM Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Employees who provide services or work in patient care or clinical areas are required to be in compliance with the University's influenza vaccination requirement.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • No or very limited physical effort required.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
